Elmers End is a place in the London Borough of Bromley, England and there are numerous theories on how Elmers End got its name. One theory is in 1226, the end or part of the parish (of Beckenham) was owned by the Elmer or Aylmer family. Another theory is that a famous highwayman, Elmer, was hung at the crossroads, making it literally ‘Elmer’s end’. However since the name of the city is “Elmers End” and not “Elmer’s,” it apparently wasn’t named after a person, and if it was named after a whole family, it would be “Elmers’”. Lastly, another theory of the Elmers End origin is that, simply, there are a lot of elm trees in the area and the city was originally named “Elms End.” However the original Victorian railway companies were notorious for both getting place names wrong when naming their stations and for trying to make station names grander than was really justified, therefore the misspelling, or flourishing, of the name makes that theory plausible.
