The village of Downe lies in a beautiful wooded valley approximately 5 ½ kilometers from Charing Cross, in the London Burough of Bromley. Although the centre of the town is quiet and peaceful, the history is very rich and lengthy.

Charles Darwin made Downe his home for forty years until his death in 1882 at the Down Home. The Downe Bank was one of his favorite places, and made into a nature preserve in his honor. Charles Dickens also frequented the village, and is said to have been deeply inspired by the beauty of the valley, which he refers to in many of his literary works.

Today, the village is home to a diverse group of industries and businesses, and a major destination for various sporting events. In fact, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport nominated Down House and the surrounding area as a World Heritage site.
