Colindale is home to many North London institutions. In the ancient parish of Hendon there was a dale between Mill Hill and The Borroughs. In the middle of the 20th century it then included the part of Edgware Road between The Hyde and Burnt Oak.

Colindale Lodge, Colindale Farm and a few cottages were the only buildings in this area which was named after a 16th century family. All of the properties were on Collindale Lane which in medieval period had been a route out of London to the Edgware Road. At the end of the 16th century it was not used that frequently and became known as Ancient Street.

Colindale Hospital was set up in 1898 as an asylum for long term sickness because Colindale property was cheap and attractive to developers. Also built in the area in 1907 was The Government Lymph Establishment which was making vaccines. Unfortunately, by 1996 most of the hospital had been closed and the majority of this now lies derelict.
