Located in Chislehurst are the Chislehurst Caves. The caves are
made from chalk and there are over 20 miles of passageways and caverns
which have been dug over a period of 8000 years. The caves were
originally mined for flint and chalk and are divided into three
main sections which are Roman, Saxon and Druid. The three sections
were connected by digging out joining passages.
The mining of chalk has been imperative to civilisations over the
years and still is to this date providing lime and flint. The compound
of lime is the base for plaster and whitewash paint. The mining
of flint was for the use of manufacturing tools and at a later date
for building. It’s quite difficult to date the mines but they
do appear on a charter approximately 1250 and was also mentioned
in church records in 1737.
In the information available the last the time were worked was
around 1830s where the Saxon mine was used by a lime burner and
flint maker. The mines became more accessible when the local railway
was constructed in 1865. The railway also made is more accessible
as a tourist attraction. During the 1900s many concerts were held
there.
The mines were used as part of the Woolwich Arsenal during the
First World War as an ammunitions depot. A small railway was constructed
to assist with the transport through the passages. Before the Second
World War the mines were used by the Kent Mushroom Company.
During the Second World War the mines became very useful as an
enormous air raid shelter which was convenient because it was within
easy reach of London and the suburbs.

The caves became a famous tourist attraction earlier this century.
The BBC and independent films companies have used the caves for
filming. Some of the programmes that have been filmed there include
Dr Who, Neverwhere, Randall & Hopkirk (deceased) and Isemenoid
