Charlton is in the borough of Greenwich, and the centre of Charlton is ‘The Village’, which overlooks the river Thames.

Take your car hire to Charlton House, which dates back to 1607, and although now a library and community centre was once the house of Sir Adam Newton (tutor to Prince Henry, son of King James I). In the garden is a mulberry tree planted in 1608 by order of the King. In the 1720s, Charlton enjoyed a bit of a lewd reputation, but has changed since then (thank goodness!).

Charlton is the home of Charlton Football Club, so use your car hire to pop down the ‘The Valley’ where they play, just north of the village. And while you’re in a sporting mood, visit the only open air pool in Greenwich – the Charlton Lido, built in 1939 in a beautiful garden setting. You might even see some filming going on, as it is a popular setting for movies of that era!
