Charing Cross Local Information
“Charing Cross” is the title given to The Charing Cross
railway station, as well as the district it is located in; at the
very center of London, England. King Edward 1st originally had built
a cross in memory of his wife, Eleanor of Castile at the hamlet
of Charing.
The Cross is officially recognized as the center of London, meaning
distances to and from London and is measured by the location of
the last of Eleanor’s crosses that was built at Charing.
Charing Cross was the final location of the cross’s for Eleanor
where her funeral procession traveled from Lincolnshire to where
she was buried at Westminster; half a mile away. At each stop the
funeral procession made, Edward erected a cross, devoted to his
late wife Eleanor. Unfortunately, only three remain to this day.
