Balham Local Information

Balham was a small hamlet of country houses and farms until about 200 years ago, and was mainly located on an old Roman road of Stane Street as part of the Streatham parish. The town grew relatively quickly as travel became easier around Balham Hill in the early 19th century. The Pimlico and Crystal Palace Railway opened in 1856, and the town center continued its growth southward to its present location. Save for a few spots of World War II bomb damage, the street patterns have remained the same.
A chapel opened in 1808, and 47 years later became its own parish, with many churches surrounding the area. Today, Balham has a thriving shopping centre which includes the popular Holdrons department store. A home known as the Heaver Estate has become Balhams first real conservation area and at nearby Hydes Farm pigs have become famous for their size.
